I must admit, I am the queen of cozy! I get this comment ALLL the time when people visit. It makes me smile, but I don’t do it to put on a show. It truly is something I need for my mental health. I purchased my home right before the start of the pandemic and I learned how to decorate and make it cozy and comforting without anyone seeing it for some time. As traumatic and tragic as the pandemic was, it also was a great time for all of us to show love to our spaces.
It is important to know that creating a cozy home doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Whether you’re in a spacious house or a small apartment, you can transform your space into a comforting haven with just a few thoughtful touches. Here are some simple and actionable tips to bring warmth and coziness to your home!
1. Layer Textures for a Warm Atmosphere
- Add soft throw blankets, plush pillows, or shaggy rugs to your living spaces.
- Mix materials like cotton, wool, and velvet to create depth and comfort.
- Pro Tip: Neutral tones with pops of warm colors (like rust, beige, or mustard) instantly make a room feel inviting. I love neutrals so I usually tend to like each of these colors. On any given day you will see my living room adorned with blankets!
2. Incorporate Warm Lighting
- Swap out harsh white bulbs for soft, warm-toned ones.
- Use string lights, candles, or lamps to create a gentle glow.
- Bonus: Flameless candles are a great alternative for a worry-free ambiance.

3. Declutter to Create Calm
- A clutter-free space helps create a sense of peace and relaxation.
- Use baskets or storage bins to tuck away items you don’t use daily.
- Try the rule: “One in, one out” to prevent clutter buildup.
Remember this: Decluttering is NOT about perfection. I am still learning. But you improve as you learn!
My favorite closet organization quote
“Being organized is not about being company-ready 24/7. It’s about being able to find what you need and restore order quickly.” – Monika Kristofferson
4. Add Warm, Natural Elements
- Incorporate wood accents, like a rustic coffee table, wooden picture frames, or shelves.
- Use woven baskets or natural fiber rugs to add texture and warmth.
- Incorporating natural tones and materials instantly makes a space feel grounded and cozy.
5. Incorporate Personal Touches
- Display meaningful items like family photos, artwork, or travel souvenirs.
- Create a gallery wall or add a shelf with sentimental decor pieces.
- Your space should reflect your personality and bring you joy.
6. Use Scents to Set the Mood
- Light scented candles or use essential oil diffusers with relaxing fragrances like lavender, vanilla, or eucalyptus.
- Freshly baked cookies or simmering stovetop potpourri (think cinnamon and orange) also work wonders.
Candles are my favorite thing! But I have also gotten into Candle Warmers!
Yall, Chesapeake Bay Peace + Tranquility is my all time favorite. See some options below.
7. Create Comfort Zones
- Dedicate cozy nooks for activities like reading, journaling, or sipping tea.
- Add a chair with a soft cushion, a throw blanket, and a side table for books or a mug.
- Small changes can turn unused corners into your favorite spots.
Pictured below is my actually nook at home. It is one of my favorite spots. It’s not the most luxurious couch but is surreee is a fan favorite. You literally can sit two people there. I love when people come over and gravitate towards it.
I am sharing options below so you can see a full view of an oversized chair! But the options are plenty – try out Living Spaces, Ashley Furniture, Rooms to GO and the like.8. Add Layers of Warmth
- Incorporate curtains to soften windows and block drafts.
- Use rugs in rooms with hardwood or tile flooring for added comfort.
- Layering fabrics and textures brings a sense of warmth to any room.
9. Make the Bedroom a Retreat
- Invest in quality bedding with soft sheets, a fluffy duvet, and extra pillows.
- Add blackout curtains to help you unwind and sleep better.
- Keep bedside tables clutter-free, adding just a lamp and a favorite book.
This is something I want to really get back to. Above is a photo of my sanctuary and Parachute Home has been HUGE in creating such a cozy bedroom retreat.
10. Play Soft Background Music
- Curate playlists with relaxing music or nature sounds.
- A small speaker in the living room or kitchen can elevate the ambiance without taking up much space.
A cozy home is about creating a space that feels warm, welcoming, and uniquely yours. Start with small changes and build over time—comfort doesn’t have to happen overnight. The beauty is in the details, so embrace what makes you feel good and make your home a true reflection of your personal style.
